Beverly Hillbillies
Topps released their Beverly Hillbillies card set in 1963. There were 66 cards in the set.
The Beverly Hillbillies was the first of what would become CBS's 'Hooterville Trilogy,' wherein a handful of popular (but
dumb) shows centered around the inhabitants of a fictional Southern town (the other two being
Green Acres and
Petticoat Junction).
As with
Gilligan's Island, critics hated it, but viewers made it a hit and kept it going for years.
The card fronts feature a color photo still from the show, with the series logo in a black oval superimposed, and the whole thing
surrounded by a white border with a funny caption at the bottom.
The card backs have an orange back, with the words HILLBILLY GAGS displayed prominently across the top. In the center is a large
white text box, surrounded by four line drawings of the principal characters' faces, containing a corny joke and the line 'Watch
the Beverly Hillbillies every Wednesday on the CBS Television Network.' Below this is the show's title, with the card number
superimposed over a drawing of a barrel in the center.
Although not difficult to find, this is a widely collected card set, with individual cards and sets being relatively costly.
Value: Individual cards from this series, in Excellent condition, can go for as much as $7.00 to $10.00 each. Full sets of 66 cards
can command prices of $500.00 to $650.00.
