Cartoon Adventures

Cartoon Adventures The Cartoon Adventures card set first appeared in 1936; no manufacturer has been determined. There were 48 cards in the set.

This curious little card series depicts popular comic strip characters of that era, and the set is divided up between 4 different character strips: Tailspin Tommy, Tarzan of the Apes, Broncho Bill, and Buck Rogers. The first 3 strips command 8 cards each, while Buck Rogers takes up fully half of the set at 24, divided into 3 subsets of 8 cards each. Each character/subset of 8 cards begins with a portrait, then 7 cards depicting the action of a story.

Each card front gives a piece of color artwork, along with a brief description of the image, the card number, and the strip series title at the bottom. Card backs were blank.

This card set, the origin of which is unknown, was apparently printed in strips, as serrated edges on many of the cards' sides show.

The American Card Catalog number for this set is R28.

Value: Valuing this card set is difficult, because some of these characters are certainly more popular than others. The Tarzan and Buck Rogers cards, individually, can go for up to $120.00 each, while the lesser character cards may bring only $30.00 each. A full set of Cartoon Adventures could bring as much as $3,000.00 to $3,500.00.
