Generals and Their Flags

Generals and Their Flags W.S. Corp released their Generals & Their Flags card set in about 1939. There are 24 cards in the set, each measuring 2-5/16" by 2-3/4".

In 1939, when much of the world was at war and the U.S. about to enter, kids were eager to learn about all of the devastating weapons that would be used, but also about the men and nations who would wield them.

The card fronts feature a crude color illustration of a prominent military leader, with the flag of his nation superimposed nearby. A red border at the top gives the set name, while a yellow or blue border along the bottom holds the general's name. The card number is held in a small white box to the side, at an angle.

The card backs repeat the name of the card set and the card number, followed by the general's name and a block of text talking about his life and accomplishments. The copyright line sits at the bottom.

This is another strip card series from W.S. Corp., the same people who gave us the Foreign Legion set among others. Many cards, unless they have been worn nearly smooth (like the example at right), will show signs of having been attached to other cards. The card numbers run from #425 to #448.

Value: Each card in this set, in Excellent condition (taking into account the perforations remaining from their being torn from strips), can command anywhere from $4.00 to $10.00, with a full set bringing $100.00 to $250.00.
