Jungle Gum

Jungle Gum World Wide Gum produced their Jungle Gum card set sometime in the 1930's. There are 48 cards in the set, each measuring 2-3/8" by 2-7/8".

Jungle Gum is a fun and nice-looking little card set that most vintage card collectors have on their want lists. The design may look old-fashioned to modern eyes, but that's simply part of its appeal. The set has an almost childlike innocence that draws in those who discover it.

The card fronts feature color artwork of a particular animal, surrounded by a white border with a pink banner containing blue lettering at the base that gives the set title (JUNGLE CHEWING GUM). The name of the animal is superimposed over the image in blue ink.

The card backs are printed in green. At the top is the card number, followed by the name of the pictured animal and its habitat, then a block of text talking about it. At the bottom are the lines START A ZOO - AS YOU CHEW and 'This is one of a series of 192 cards of Wild Animal Life' followed by ad matter for the gum.

There were never 192 cards, of course; the company printed the first 24 cards normally, but with #'s 25 to 72 they decided to skip several numbers - almost certainly to keep kids buying the cards to get the missing numbers, which never existed in the first place. We know this to be the case because an uncut sheet of the second series of 24 cards shows which ones were printed together.

The animal pictures were originally used in a card set from Hassan Cigarettes in 1910, 'Animal Series.'

Value: Individual cards in this series command a price of about $8.00 to $10.00 each. A full set in Excellent condition can be worth up to $400.00 - $500.00.
