Lone Ranger

Lone Ranger Gum Inc. released their Lone Ranger card set in 1940. There were 48 cards in the set, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/8".

This set of Lone Ranger cards is probably one of the most beloved card series of all time. Its vivid artwork and exciting text have made it a hit with collectors for 70 years and counting.

The card fronts show a piece of color artwork surrounded by a thin white border. The card backs give the card number and caption, then a large block of text that tells a complete story with an appearance by the Lone Ranger. Below this is a brief ad for LONE RANGER CHEWING GUM and the copyright matter.

The set may have been released in 3 different series, because #'s 1 thru 24 are fairly plentiful (at least in lesser condition), #'s 25-36 are much more scarce, and #'s 37-48 are very difficult to find in any decent condition. Note also that the paper on which the series was printed has not aged well, with a lot of tanning found even on higher-grade cards.

Value: Cards in this set carry different prices, often depending on where in the numbering they fall (see paragraph above). Thus cards can be purchased for anywhere between $50.00 to $100.00 each. (Note also that cards #1 and #48 carry a premium, due to issues involving handling that can affect any vintage set.) A full set of Gum Inc. Lone Ranger cards may set a purchaser back as much as $2,000.00 to $3,000.00. Note: These prices are all speculative, as these cards are on many collectors' want lists and the supply is limited.
