Planet of the Apes (1969)

Planet of the Apes movie Topps released their first Planet of the Apes card set in 1969. It contained 66 cards in the set.

The original Planet of the Apes movie appeared in 1968; starring Charlton Heston, it proved to be very successful, and spawned several sequel films, as well as a TV series, animated cartoon, and loads of merchandise over the next few years. While the 1975 Topps Planet of the Apes card set showed scenes from the TV show, this one has still photos taken from the first film.

The card fronts show a color still photo surrounded by a white border, with the card caption shown superimposed in a small red stylized block. The card backs are green, with the central block of text surrounded by an elaborate line drawing border showing some of the ape characters from the film. The title of the set is at the top, followed by the card caption and then a block of text. The card number sits in a small black circle to the right.

The card fronts are very similar to those from teh 1976 set, unless one is familiar with certain (human) characters exclusive to either the movie or the TV series. The card backs, however, are entirely different, allowing for easy identification. (The card stock on the 1969 may also be a bit lighter.)

Note: There is a test version of this set, or at least of some of the cards in the set, which look to be exact copies except that they have a black border around the photo instead of a white border. Note also, however, that the British A&BC version of this set also features a black border; but those cards are quickly differentiated because they are smaller.
